WONDERING WHAT YOU SHOULDN´T LEAVE  OUT  WHILE VISITIng piran?

a hint – if I was in your shoes

TO START THE DAY

When drinking morning coffee in your  pyjamas on holiday terrace doesn´t feel enough, you must get your coffee  at  »Neptunček« bar  (main bus station).

I admit, I don´t drink coffee, but I have heard the  »rumours« , and have  been told  by coffee lovers, this it the »IT« place to get one .

But if you want a  first row seat  by the sea side, there is no other choice, then  to get your coffee and  fresh croissant   in  »Caffe Teater« bar  (next to the main pier and Hotel Piran)

Best breakfast is served in »Cafinho« bar  where you won´t be disappointed at service, nor location.

There is also a place for  cold cuts lovers.  If you desire  a cold cut of good cheese, homemade delicacies  and a glass of vine, the  pit stop is »Čakola« bar ( next  to the  fire station ).

You can also order a fish plate (octopus salad, balacar… ), if you are more of a sea food fan .

ARE YOU HUNGRY & READY FOR A WARM MEAL?

When you are in a hurry to seize the day on the beach   or  taking   a trip to the Piran hinterland, you  should order a pizza at the oldest pizzeria in the city Piran called pizzeria “Batana” at  Tartini square. Size of pizza is a bit smaller then what we are used to,  but it’s really really good ! Pizza sandwich is also cool, and very practical , when you need something “to go”.

For fans of Balkan flavours  I suggest you visit  “Čevabdžinica Sarajevo 84”  – pleskavico (meat like in burger)  in  lepinja  (bread similar to bun)  with kajmak (cream cheese),   onion and prebranac (a dish made of beans) is very tasty!

Are you one of those that associate sea side with squids?

In that case I advise you the buffet fish at “kantina Fritolin”  on Prvomajski  square.  Waiting for your lunch is fun (self-service): you take the shell of a clam  with a number, and  wait for the bell on the kitchen window to  call  your number!

But if you are looking for a real experience in Piran inner bay , paraphrase “Podlanica” boat by  the red lighthouse is the right choice for you – of course if you don´t mind rocking the boat Fresh fish is on the menu daily. Call on 051 312 020 and tell them, that you have been sent by Peter and Laura. Maybe you´ll get a table even when they are overbooked. A hint – I choose the table on upper terrace with the best view!

DO YOU LOVE THE SUN, SEA AND SUNBATHING?

The nearest beach is located in front of the Hotel Piran or next to the gate at the entrance to the city.

I prefer walking on the old path under the flysch by the sea to Fijesa.

I especially like the beach below the parking garage when I plan to sunbathe for hours and hours. I can get pizza, gnocchi with prawns in pizzeria “Burin”  or  a fresh squid  and fish at the fish canteen “Pri  Polonci”!

If you don’t like crowds and like to research the wild beaches, I  recommend Mesečev bay in Strunjan. It´s a bit more difficult to access, but that gives it its charm, doesn´t it?

A hint:  park on the Belveder, next to the campsite and  walk along the forest  path  to the beach. On the way you will find wooden bridge, one of the points where most of Strunjan cliff photos are taken. I suggest you bring water and a snack!

Sečovlje salt pans? Experience, you shouldn´t live out.

You can choose between walking among the pools of salt or  the ex-railway line that connected Trieste – Piran – Poreč, so called Parenzana. You can take a rest in park Talasso Spa Lepa Vida, which is located in heart of salt pans, away from all the loud circus in the city.

Time stops at the resort, and you will wish, that the holiday never ends.

THE HISTORICAL CIRCLE AROUND PIRAN (FOR A BIT LESS HOT DAYS OR SUMMER  EVENINGS)

P. s. Prepare your phone and camera, it’s time for shooting! (@velaseastories) 🙂

I suggest that your start your journey on the main Piran square –  Tartini square. You probably already took some selfies there, but you haven´t noticed  , that there is quite a few   Piran attractions, which  definitely deserve a shred of your attention. By the way, did you know that once there was a harbour  on  today´s location of the square? The square is named by the violinist Guiseppe Tartini, whose statue  is in the middle of the square. Next to the restaurant “La bottega dei sapori” is located Tartini house. Take a tour and see Tartini rooms, his work  and instruments. Before you go on, stop for a moment and check what colour Benečanka house is now!

While continuing your way  past the aquarium, you´ll see our little studio Vela, next to Hotel Piran. If you are interested in how and where the candlesticks of woody  debris are made , stop at our studio Vela and check out other handmade products.

After a walk by the sea, you will soon arrive to the Piran´s  cape,  adorned by a mighty lighthouse, which  is also the only stone lighthouse on the Slovenian coast. Check out if it is open and take a look inside.  By the mid-eighties of the last century a lighthouse keeper lived there with his family.

At this point you can also find the oceanographic buoy, which is visible in the direction of Gradež.  In its surroundings it is located the “underwater Triglav” (By the way Triglav is the highest peak in Slovenia) , or the deepest point of the Slovenian sea, t.i. around 42 m. And if you´re lucky enough, in the morning or  evening, very close to the cape, you can see a flock of dolphins swimming near the shore, mostly in the direction of Bernardin. Dolphins are followed by the association Morigenos and you can even adopt a dolphin on their website!

Next to it is situated the baptistery and in between, there is the Piran bell tower with its 47m height. Take your time and check out of what height the famous annual   drop of Piran princess to the Tartini square is. Each year townspeople of Piran vote for the princess of the year, and she gets the  honour to zip line from the bell tower to the city. Do you think you could do it?

There is only up now! If you caught your breathe after walking 146 wooden stairs of our tower bell, there is another short ascent along  the Korpus street to the Piran defensive walls. Discover a view of our little city from the highest point of the town and catch the most beautiful sunset. Click-click and share with us the most beautiful moments at sea (@velaseastories)

PIRAN from
the sea

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER

But if you’re looking for something special and if you would like  to surprise your better half and wait for the sunset by a glass of champagne, Matic is  the right address for you (check out the pictures on Instagramu @vintageboattours)

If you are enchanted by Piran and you would like to immortalized Mediterranean pearl from the sea side, I suggest a panoramic ride with a motor boat Subaquatic. This is a glass bottom boat, which allows you  to observe  fish and sea bottom. Your kids will love it!   Contact  Mitja Škrobar, 041/602 -783

We usually make time for museums  and stuff  like that I would recommend: clamps museum on Tartini square, Aquarium next to Hotel Piran, museum of underwater activities (this one is the closest to our apartment), maritime museum Sergej Mašera next to the port, or Mediadom – multimedia museum Piran.

A FEW TIPS FOR OUR FOUR  – LEGGED FRIENDS

There is hardly any green area in town, that is why I suggest you do your morning walk in the direction of Fijesa or Bernardin.

And a definite MUST are dog waist bags (so called POOP BAGS) and a bottle of WATER!!!

When in a hurry to reach the lawn, I suggest you go towards primary school (straight ahead from the apartment suite , till the end of Aškerčeva street, pass the well , on the right and there you are)

Does your dog like to swim? At the top/peak of  touristic summer season I recommend you take your dog to Fijesa or Bernardin beach, but other than that, you and your hairy friend can swim anywhere.
